Grundy Center Wins Spartan Invitational
The Grundy Center boy’s golf team for the 5th consecutive year captured it’s own 10 team Spartan Invitational tournament. Behind a balanced scoring attack, the Spartans edged a talented second place Union team 325-327 for the team title. Dike-New Hartford finished third 25 strokes back.
Ian Flores from Union earned medalist honors with a 78 edging Bobby Ayers and Brett Heaford also from Union by a stroke.. Flores posted a front nine 37. Ayers won a three-hole play-off to finish runner-up medalist.
Trailing the Knights after the first nine holes, the Spartans used a strong back nine from Ayers to claim a narrow two-stroke victory. “Bobby was the only player in the field to post a round in the 30’s the back nine,” said Head Coach Dennis Dirks. “His even par 36 in worsening weather conditions says a lot about his determination.”
“Right behind Bobby we had four other Top 10 individual medalist including Grant Stevens 81, Michael Henely 82, Zach Swalley 83, and Taylor Schupbach’s 84. That type of scoring depth in those types of conditions, illustrates character of this team,” added Dirks.
