GOLF started out well all around. I went to my first few lessons with Jerry Johnson at Marshalltown. The season crept up slowly but finally it was here. the first day of pratice. It was a cold day outside but that didn't cool my enthusiasm for the game. The team was looking pretty good this year. Qualifying rounds came and went. But the rest of the team made it through fine. The varsity team included: Tyler Burmaster, Ben Mills, Scott Speirs, Bobby Ayers, Grant Stevens, and Zach Swalley (me). We started off strong with our first meet win, and never looked back.
It was a fairly easy season, but I'm sure that was helped by our strong team. If one person was playing bad, then the other people were ready to step up. If a player had a bad streak, then we had several ready, able, and certainly willing players on the Junior Varsity team. The only faulter during the regualar season was one lost meet. Except for that, our team entered the conference meet with an unblemished record. After winning the conference, district and sectional meets, it was on to state! So far nothing had provided much of a challenge to our team. State was played at Lakeside Country Club in Fort Dodge. The first day brought about 40 mph winds and a dreary day. After a hard day's work on the course, we were in a 2 stroke lead. The second day turned out a little bit better. The sun was shining, and not really much wind. It was looking well for the Spartans. The course was a perfect lay out for us. And lo and behold we played up to par. We won the state championship for the first time in Grundy Center Boys Golf history. But like all good things, the season ended and we went back to Grundy to receive congrats. With all the speeches given and the trophy safely in the case, we left the school a happy bunch.

The summer brought about lazy 9's in the afternoon sun and amoung other things not much else. The winter was as exciting for the highschool golfing world as watching the snow melt. As soon as that happend however, it revealed green grass and the spring fever hit everyone hard. Right now it is all I can do to concentrate on school. I had my first lesson of the year today with Jerry.(3-4-04) Michael Henley came with me and his season looks promising as well. Well that's pretty much it. As the season rolls on I will keep you posted.
