The Grundy Center boy’s golf team will qualified for state tournament for the fourth consecutive year after winning their district meet at Gates Park on Friday, May 21st. The defending state champions survived a two-hour weather delay to post a team score of 313 to best runner-up host school Waterloo Columbus by 12 strokes. The Hudson Pirates also qualified for the state meet as a team with a team score of 328. Junior Grant Stevens guided the Spartans earning runner-up medalist honors firing a two-over par 74. Stevens posted two rounds of 37. Dan Swomley from Hudson claimed medalist honors with an even-par 72. Bobby Ayers posted a 78 and tied for fourth place for the second straight week, but lost a four-hole playoff to Kristian Einsweiler from Hudson. Juniors Taylor Schupbach and Michael Henely carded 80 and 81 to round out the Spartan team scoring. Sophomores Zach Swalley and Brett Speirs shot 84 and 86 respectively to round out the Spartan line-up. Coach Dirks had these comments “My hope was for this team to play well enough on an extremely tough Gates Park course against a highly competitive field to qualify for the state meet. For all this team has accomplished throughout the year it would have been a shame for this group to not have the opportunity to represent the North Iowa Cedar League in Panora. This is a very deserving group of young men, looking forward to the challenges the Lake Panorama Course has to offer” The Class 2A state meet will be held at Lake Panorama in Panora on May 28th and 29th.
